Dear 4th Grade Families,

Happy October! The school year is already going by so quickly, and it is hard to believe it is already October. We have made it through our first units in all subject areas! Here is what is coming up next…

Important Dates

Oct. 8 - PTA Google Meet Meeting

Oct. 15 - Teacher Work Day/4th Grade Virtual Conferences (No School for Students)

Oct. 16 - Fall Break (No School)

Oct. 22 - Vision & Hearing Screening

Oct. 28 - Picture Retakes

Oct. 29 - PTA Sponsored Wheels on Fire Pizza Food Truck

Social Studies/Science

We started our first science unit about “Earth’s Systems” yesterday! In this unit, students will continue to learn about the processes that have shaped the Earth. So far, we have had a lot of fun exploring how the early Earth looked, and the kids are already enjoying this unit!

Math

In math, we have started Unit 2: Whole Number Multiplication. Students have created a new goal based on the unit standards. Students will be working on 1-digit by 4-digit multiplication, as well as 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication in 4th grade. To be ready and successful with this unit, we strongly suggest that students practice math multiplication facts from 0 to 12 at home (creating their own flashcards to study on index cards would be great).

Literacy

In reading and writing, we will begin our unit about informational texts next week. Using weather related topics, students will learn about text features and structures, organizing ideas, using precise language, and writing with domain-specific vocabulary, after we write our new unit goals for each subject.

Word Work

Next Monday, students will get their new words to study. We will begin actual words, based on common weekly roots, now that we are through the prefix and suffix lessons. Our tests will be paper & pencil (not electronic), and we will send them home graded the following week. It is really important that students study their list of words each week. Weekly spelling assessments are each Friday.

Conferences

4th grade student-led conferences, via Zoom, will be during the day Thursday, October 15th. At school, we are preparing a student ePortfolio of work samples, grades, data, and goals that will be shared with you before conferences. Please look over these ePortfolios with your child before conferences on the 15th. Our sign up will be coming out on Signup Genius next week. Please select a time slot that works for both you and your child to attend, via Zoom (you can join from different computers if need be), so we can meet together to talk about successes and share goals. Thanks!

Hopefully, we can all get out this weekend and enjoy the beautiful fall colors and weather! Thanks for all you do to help with learning at home. Have a wonderful weekend.

With appreciation,
