Hi 2017-2018 5th Grade Families,

Welcome to Mrs. Darting’s 5th grade class! I wanted to introduce myself, share some important links with you, and give you some insight about this exciting school year. I am so glad you are part of our class!

About Me

I have taught at Blue Heron since 2004. I started in 6th grade and moved to 5th in 2008. Since working at Blue Heron, I have received my Jeffco ESL certification and my Masters in Educational Technology. I am originally from Omaha, Nebraska, moved out here for college in 1999, and have lived here since. My husband, son, and I live in Jeffco and enjoy being part of all that Colorado has to offer. I have grown up in a family of teachers and knew from a young age that teaching is what I wanted to do too. It is such a blessing to spend my day with your child, and I look forward to working with you to make this a great year for him/her!

  1. To get a better sense of your child as a learner, I have created a quick questionnaire that I would like to ask for you to fill out:

  2. Modified Contact Days Sign-Up (Aug 21st or Aug 28th):

  3. Monthly Literacy Log:

There are many ways to stay informed, from upcoming happenings in our community to nightly homework in our classroom. Not only will you receive emails from me regarding important classroom information, but here are some other places you might want to follow and check throughout the year:

  1. Darting Class Website- Important links, newsletters, nightly homework, presentations

  1. Blue Heron 5th Grade Website- important links, schedule

  1. Darting Class Facebook Page- upcoming events, pictures of class events

  1. Twitter- upcoming events, local happenings, interesting articles

Students will have math homework on Wednesday evenings, and literacy homework Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday, and the weekends for about 50-75 minutes each. Math homework will be from our resource, Math Expressions. Reading and writing at home will be recorded on the monthly literacy logs and turned in the first of each month, and those can be magazines, novels, Internet articles, audio books, graphic novels, etc. Students will also fill out their planners each night to review what we have learned and write down any homework they may have. Please look at these and sign each evening to help keep your child accountable.

Snacks and Water

Students are welcome to bring a snack and a water bottle each day. Our lunch is later this year at 12:45pm, so they will have time during math to eat in the mornings. Please encourage your student to pack a healthy snack and water. Please no chips, candy, cookies, etc.

It is such an honor to be your child's 5th grade teacher. I will do my best to help them grow, protect, and love them dearly throughout the year. Thank you for entrusting me with your most precious gifts. It is going to be a great year! If you need to contact me at any time, please don’t hesitate to email me. I will always try to get back to you within 24 hours/business day.
