Welcome and Introductions

Dear 4th Grade Families,

Welcome to Mrs. Darting’s 4th grade class! I wanted to introduce myself, share some important links with you, and give you some insight about this exciting school year. I am so glad you are part of our class!

About Me

Teaching is my passion, and I have been blessed to call it my profession since 2003. I have experience teaching 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. I have taught at Blue Heron since 2004 and am excited to start the adventure with you in 4th grade this year! Since working at Blue Heron, I have received my Jeffco English as a Second Language (ESL) certification and my Masters in Educational Technology. I am originally from Omaha, Nebraska, but moved out here for college in 1999, and have lived here since. My husband, son, and I live in Jeffco and enjoy being part of all that Colorado has to offer. I have grown up in a family of teachers and knew from a young age that teaching is what I wanted to do. It is such a blessing to spend my day with your child, and I look forward to working with you to make this a great year for him/her!

Homework

Students will have weekly math homework and reading/literacy homework nightly. Studies have shown that children learn to cultivate a love of reading through shared family reading time, starting when children are babies and continued through junior high. At Blue Heron, we ask that you make it a priority to read together as a family or one-on-one with your 4th grader to cultivate his/her love of reading. Choose different genres, discuss plots, ask questions, and involve your child through the literature. It only takes 5-10 minutes a day, but by using the simple strategy of stopping at a cliffhanger, children are encouraged to continue reading silently on their own (which has shown to increase comprehension and sustained reading time) and have anticipation to continue reading together the next evening. Parents, please record the time read (nightly or weekly) on the weekly class Homework/Literacy Log sheet and have students turn it each Monday to earn the special recess. Students will also fill out their planners each night to review what we have learned and write down any homework they may have. Please look at these and sign each evening to help keep your child accountable.

Snacks and Water

Students are welcome to bring a healthy snack and a water bottle (only flip tops allowed) each day. Our lunch is later this year at 12:50pm, so they will have time to eat a quick snack in the mornings before AMP. Please encourage your student to pack a healthy snack and water. Please no nuts (allergies), chips, candy, cookies, etc.

It is such an honor to be your child's 4th grade teacher. I will do my best to help them grow, to protect, and to love them dearly throughout the year. Thank you for entrusting me with your most precious gifts. It is going to be a great year! If you need to contact me at any time, please don’t hesitate to email me (Vallory.Darting@jeffco.k12.co.us). I will always try to get back to you within 24 hours/a business day.
